Riding partners for life
Connie Crockett – Yellow Springs, OH
I've always loved riding, from speedy trips alone to the candy store in childhood to week-long group rides today. Riding has always brought me joy and peace. A full moon ride brought me my husband! We have terrific paved trails in this part of Ohio that connect to one another for hundreds of miles. One late summer night after I'd been widowed I was invited to join a group riding south to Xenia and back, about 18 miles with plans for a beer afterwards. I had a cheap headlamp that dimmed early leaving me somewhat anxious in the long wooded stretches, as I feared running into a skunk. I met Mike at the turnaround point and he rode ahead, lighting the way for a safe return. On subsequent rides at which I was usually the only woman, guys would drop me and my “Mom bike” on the hills, but Mike always fell back to keep me company. I took his companionable reliability on rides as a good indication of who he would be as a partner. We married, we are happy and remain passionate advocates for local trails, moonlight rides and cycling as away of life.
