Memories of Front Wheels Falling Off & Standing on Milk Crates Too
Tony Barnet – Tarzana, CA
It was a J.C.Penney, red: I don’t remember the size (?24″). The front wheel fell off the first time I got on it, which I understand continues to be a feature of cheapo bikes from chain stores. I also remember that all we kids had to stand on wooden milk boxes (this was 1948 or so) to mount our bikes. (Ours was One Oak Dairy, who were the sponsors of my Little League team.) But it was empowering, liberating, etc.; and part of the continuing thrill of riding now, is the sense of youth and new worlds to experience.
