At a very young age I had an insatiable fascination with bikes. I biked almost everywhere I could. I’d find excuses no matter how short or far a distance to get on my bike.
Need something from the corner store Mom? Don’t get up! I’ll ride my bike there!
Forgot something at work Dad? Don’t get up…I’ll go get it on my bike!
My bicycle was my source of freedom and inspiration and we were inseparable.
Fast forward to my college years….I grew distant from that part of my life and fell into a rut. I wasn’t really engaged at school and as we all know, idle hands are the devil’s playground. I began to live a very unhealthy and unsustainable life style. I missed the freedom my bike gave me and the inspiration it instilled in me.
I eventually matured and got out of that rut. What came to my rescue? Age, desire to improve, a flourishing career, a wonderful family and my bike 🙂
I slowly began to incorporate biking into my life again. First it was short trips to the park and ride, then it was commuting all the way downtown to work, then it was becoming a member of the Cascade Bicycle Club, and then becoming a ride ref volunteer for Cascade.
Over the past 4 years, I’ve done 100+ mile grand fondo rides all over the pacific northwest and Canada. I’ve done the Group Health Seattle to Portland bike ride in under 14 hours (204 miles!).
Now, I bike everywhere and my wife and son come along too sometimes and it is absolutely wonderful!
I look back on my past and I have vowed to continue moving along on 2 wheels so that I can continue to live a happier, healthier lifestyle and, most importantly, to be a role model and example to my family so that they can do the same.
I ride because it’s part of who I am, and always will be 🙂
