Fighting Chronic Illness by Cycling!
Michael Reinert – Philadelphia, PA
In early 2014, I started to get blind spells with intense pain in and around my temples every 3 days that lasted for the entire year of 2014! I was suffering and bad! I was scared. I didn’t know what was going on, brain cancer, a brain tumor, I just didn’t know. So I saw a neurologist, and started doing immense amounts of research. The neurologist turned me into a pill. After all, you know what they say; “You are what you eat”. Nothing worked! However after finding some scholarly literature, a research study which was performed on rats which turned out to be extremely useful. Without getting into too much detail, the conclusion of this study was that the exercise-only group of rats which were tested, had a significantly reduced cortical spreading depolarization velocity as to those which have not exercised. So despite my throbbing temples, I jumped on the bike and rode for 20 miles. I was shocked to find out that in the days proceeding my bike ride, I didn’t suffer one single migraine! This has now lasted for 4 months. I accredit the frequency reduction of migraines solely to cycling! Because nothing is better than low impact or no impact exercise, especially when you’re in pain, or aren’t feeling well!
