Which streets need protected bike lanes? After years of avoiding a specific answer to that question, a coalition of forward-thinking U.S. cities has settled on a rough standard.
As we reported last fall, NACTO’s new guidance is ambitious — it’s aiming to describe a street network that parents would be willing to let their eight-year-old ride on. Protected bike lanes are recommended for any street where more than 5 percent of autos move faster than 25 mph. And it’s not intended as a gotta-do-it-this-way set of rules, just an articulation of the ideal standard.
NACTO’s free webinar on the subject is Tuesday, Feb. 20, at 1 p.m. Eastern time. NACTO’s Aaron Villere will join Atlanta Chief Bicycle Officer Becky Katz and U.K. academic Rachel Aldred, who’ll be discussing the impressive ways the “all ages and abilities” biking network in Cambridge, U.K., helps people with disabilities.
