PeopleForBikes seek a GIS Intern

Title: GIS Internship

Position Summary:

PeopleForBikes (PFB) is seeking a GIS intern, based remotely, to support the organization’s electric mountain bike initiative and resources that help bike riders find great eMTB rides throughout the U.S. The ideal candidate will be responsible for completing two main tasks:

  1. Updating PeopleForBikes’ electric mountain bike (eMTB) map so that all of the data is in a uniform presentation and links to the associated land manager’s website that describes the eMTB policy at hand. The intern must be able to handle raw geospatial data from a variety of sources and convert that data to be uniformly presented and easy to understand/use on PeopleForBikes’ eMTB map webpage.
  2. Transferring all of the data that is on the eMTB map onto PeopleForBikes’ Ride Spot app. This process requires exporting individual trail data into GPX files to then importing onto PeopleForBikes’ Ride Spot platform. All of the eMTB map data must be equally reflected on the Ride Spot app, including the descriptions and links to the associated eMTB policy.

The person in this position will:

  • Work closely with PeopleForBikes’ electric mountain bike (eMTB) map.
  • Analyze spatial data with the use of mapping software (ArcGIS or QGIS). 
  • Design digital maps with geographic data and other data sources.
  • Perform data transforming and cleaning to convert data into its desired form.
  • Manage a digital library of geographic maps in various file types.

The GIS intern will work closely with PeopleForBikes’ regulatory and policy analyst to fulfill the completion of these tasks. All work for this position will be completed remotely. All necessary meetings will take place virtually.

Required Qualifications

  • Possession of a computer with ArcGIS and QGIS capabilities, and experience with those mapping tools.
  • Proficiency with database programming languages such as SQL or Python.
  • Proficiency with front-end design languages such as HTML, CSS, JavaScript and various mapping languages.
  • Attention to detail and good problem-solving skills.

Desirable Qualifications

  • Working towards (or completion of) a degree in Geography, Computer Science or a related field.
  • Outstanding quantitative skill set.
  • Analytical mindset.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills.

Compensation

The GIS Intern will be compensated $20/hour. Completion of these tasks is expected to take 80 hours, which can be spread out over a maximum of eight weeks, beginning Oct. 5.
