March Madness City Ratings Predictions: Women’s Final Four

April 2, 2019

Eugene, Oregon.

NCAA Women’s Basketball: Final Four

As we prepare to release our 2019 City Ratings, we’re taking a look at the towns and cities represented in the NCAA Basketball Tournament. Instead of looking at basketball teams, we’re looking at the cities those teams are located in. We’re matching cities up according to last year’s City Ratings. Stay tuned after the games are complete, for the release of our new round of ratings.

Eugene, Oregon (University of Oregon) 1.9
Waco, Texas (Baylor University)

Waco is using state and local grants for exciting bike infrastructure projects. They’ve also got growing support from city leaders, and some great goals in place. Hopefully Waco will be back in the tournament next year, and we’d love to keep up on their progress with a City Snapshot, so that we can score them properly, with more data.

The Oregon Ducks have a Ridership score of 2.8, meaning a lot of people in Eugene ride bikes, often. One way that they’re boosting their ridership is with a JUMP bikeshare, which serves the city and the university campus. We have a hunch that Eugene has some new strength coming off the bench, so we won’t be surprised to see them back in the dance next year as well. Our PlacesForBikes City Ratings prediction: Oregon over Baylor for the Championship game.

South Bend, Indiana.

South Bend, Indiana (Notre Dame) 1.6
Storrs, Connecticut (University of Connecticut)

Storrs, Connecticut is part of Mansfield, about 20 miles east of Hartford. While these scenic roads and historic villages are likely a joy to pedal, we don’t yet have enough data to fully rank them. We’d especially love to get a City Snapshot from them, and cheer them into their next round of March Madness.

The League of American Bicyclists lists South Bend as a Silver Level Bike Friendly Community. The National Complete Streets Coalition, a program of Smart Growth America, named South Bend as a Safe Streets Academy Winner. They’re clearly putting in the effort. We also like South Bend’s commitment to Reach — this score determines how well a community’s low-stress network serves all members of the community. Our PlacesForBikes City Ratings prediction: South Bend over Connecticut.

Our Championship game prediction:

South Bend, Indiana (Notre Dame) 1.6

Eugene, Oregon (University of Oregon) 1.9
